Juniors (13-18)

Welcome to Riviera Rugby

The aim of our rugby school is to offer children a way to ENJOY themselves, having FUN, DEVELOPING their skills, playing in a TEAM, and all in a SAFE and WELCOMING environment.

We offer training for kids from 4-12, and juniors from 13-18, and welcome all levels of players, from total novices, to experienced players. In addition, once the children reach the age of 7, we offer the opportunity to test themselves through tournaments and matches.

For our juniors, as they become more physically capable, the game becomes more physically demanding, and increasingly technical. Our approach to junior development reflects this shift, as we increase the number of training days per week, and extend the training season.

As teenagers, juniors have a much wider range of interests and demands on their time, and as a result, all rugby clubs see a decrease in participation levels. For most clubs in Switzerland, this means they are not able to field a full team at under 14, 16 and 18 level. Riviera is no exception, and to allow our juniors an opportunity to continue to play, we have created an entente with Haut Broye and Monthey – and our players play under the Entente des Alpes.

TRAINING – depending upon the age group, training is available, Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings throughout most of the year, with a small winter break in December and January. Venues vary between Blonay, St Legier (indoor winter training only) and Monthey.

A Typical Training Session Training Schedule

MATCHES are typically organised as part of a league structure by the Vaudoise Rugby Association (U14’s), or the Swiss Rugby Federation (U16’s and 18+). Our home games are played at the Monthey pitch, and away games can be anywhere in Switzerland.

WHAT YOU NEED – Rugby requires very little specialist equipment, typically shorts, a strong shirt, socks and football boots. Everyone involved in contact rugby, children in under 8’s and upwards, are required to wear a mouth guard during training and matches, to protect both them, and their fellow players. Mouth guards are always available for sale at the club. We also offer a very popular range of Riviera branded items including shirts, shorts, and socks, as well as rain and wind resistant training tops.

COACHES – Our coaches come from all over world, from France to Argentina, and the UK to the Netherlands, and every age group has both English and French speaking coaches. All our lead coaches are experienced rugby players, and generally have coaching certificates from either the Swiss Rugby Federation or other International rugby bodies.

EVENTS – building a friendly, sociable club is important to us. That’s why we organise 2 key annual social events to bring together children and parents. In late June, early July, we offer a barbecue for the entire family, celebrating the beginning of summer. At the end of season party, normally in late October, we celebrate the achievements of our players, and thank everyone involved in the club, with a free end of season gift for every child.
